Astaxanthin is very effective in antioxidant coverage, because it filters into every cell of the body.

Its unique molecular lipophilic and hydrophilic properties allow it to span the entire cell, with one end of the Astaxanthin molecule protecting the fat-soluble part of the cell and one end protecting the water-soluble part of the cell. Natural Astaxanthin is exceptionally powerful in singlet-oxygen quenching.

Studies have found that Astaxanthin is:

Astaxanthin can help improve blood lipid profiles by decreasing low density lipoprotein (LDL, bad cholesterol) and triglycerides, and by increasing high density lipoprotein (HDL, good cholesterol).

A human clinical trial in Japan found a very promising effect on LDL. Researchers concluded that supplementation of Astaxanthin "inhibits LDL oxidation and possibly therefore contributes to the prevention of atherosclerosis" (Iwamoto, et al, 2000).

Another potential benefit for cardiovascular health may be Astaxanthin's ability to decrease blood pressure.

Astaxanthin (6mg/day x 4 weeks) reduced systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure by 7% in 20 healthy postmenopausal volunteers (lwabayashi et.al, 2009).

In a human study, the effect of orally supplemented Spirulina (4.5 g / day, for 6 weeks) was evaluated in Mexican population.

Spirulina significantly reduced serum triglyceride values, boosted HDL and lowered total cholesterol in the test subjects. The hypocholesterolemic action of Spirulina may be due to its phycocyanin content. The enhanced endothelial nitric oxide release is seen to reduce vascular resistance. Also, C-phycocyanin is a selective inhibitor of Cyclooxygenase 2. This action is seen to inhibit the synthesis or release of the Cyclooxygenase-dependent vasoconstrictor metabolite of arachidonic acid and induce vasodilation - leading to reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Research states that Astaxanthin accelerated lipid utilization during exercise, leading to improvement of endurance and efficient reduction of body fat with training.

  • An increase of fatty acyl-CoA uptake into the mitochondria via carnitine palmitoyltransferase during exercise may be involved in the promotion of lipid metabolism by the antioxidant activity of Astaxanthin.
