Natural and Synthetic Astaxanthin :
Astaxanthin can be classified according to stereoisomers, geometric isomers and free or esterified forms. There are three forms of stereo isomers characterized by the position of the two hydroxyl groups on the molecule – 3S 3’S, 3R 3’S and 3R 3’R isomers.
Synthetic Astaxanthin contains the 3R 3’S isomer, which is not convertible to the more common and natural 3S 3’S form. Natural Astaxanthin found in Haematococcus pluvialis is esterified and predominantly occurs as the 3S 3”S isomer, which is more stable.
